Finns are GREAT

Do NOT get offended, please…. This is written little bit tongue in cheek, although the message is important!

In Finland we have this thing called “Pullonpalautus” ! And it is GREAT- It is greater than anything else I have seen anywhere else. In Finland -the land of taxes- we have also a thing called “juomapakkausvero”. It is GREAT tax for drink companies- Probably the greatest tax on universe, since you don’t need to pay it, if bottles you manufacture can be recycled through “pullonpalautus”. It is the greatest tax on universe, because in 2017 it made people return 96% of metal cans, 92% of the plastic bottles and 88% of the glass bottles.  And Why are Finns so eager to return their bottles and cans into pullonpalautus?

       1)Finns drink a lot (of alcohol. A L O T!!!! But I did not reveal that to you. Let’s keep it our secret…!) therefore everyones house would be flooding with empty bottles, and we don’t like that

      2) It is a deposit based return system. WE GET MONEY FROM OUR EMPTY BOTTLES (and then we buy more drinks….)

      3) Finns are so great, that we like clean environment and since you get money from returned bottles, you happily clean others’ messes too, and get rich while doing it! And that is what makes Finns so great! The greatest.

Plastic bottle 0,20 cents, metal can 0,10 cents and wine bottle I CANT REMEMBER. How is that even possible...

What I do not understand is WHY we drink so much bottled and gassed water, when our drinking water mostly is excellent! I used to be so bad myself with bubbly mineral waters, just had to have it!! Now my bad addiction is gone, and I happily carry my reusable water bottle everywhere with me! During the coldest winter months I find it hard to drink enough (water), but here is the solution; MAKE IT LOOK NICE. Same stuff, new package; old marketing solution and lies are believed with no further questions! 

Also what I do NOT understand is why Irish and I are so hooked on red wine? Would be more environmentally friendly to drink Finnish beer or vodka, but no…. RED WINE (and lots of it….! I did NOT tell this!!) Another question is, why do we drink alcohol at all, but let’s firmly leave it aside.

That makes one think, that even though the concept of bottle return is great (the greatest!!) this is also taking lots of natural resources; the transportation costs, re-manufacturing the recycled material, transporting that all again... We surely have let marketing industry brainwash ourselves into weird lifestyle; but surely without a Coke you can't have fun, and all of us need that energy drink power, other wise it is just impossible to go through the day!

But be like a Finn and recycle your bottles -with or without deposit refund system!

P.S. In Finland we have also this thing called "Never ending winter". If you happen to love summer, it really sucks!!

P.S.2. Other Nordic countries have this system too, but let's pretend we are the only ones

Että ollaan me suomalaiset vaan hyviä! PALPA on hyvä ja juomapakkausvero on hyvä, pullonpalautus on ihan paras.. (pienellä äänellä sitten voi lisätä, että hyvä muutkin Pohjoismaat, sillä me kaikki ollaan tajuttu tämän systeemin hienous, mutta ei nyt huomioida niitä, vaan ollaan kerrankin suomalaisille epätyypillisesti ihan että hyvä vaan ja ainoastaan me.) 

PALPAn etusivulla on palautettujen pakkausten reaaliaikainen laskuri; tänä vuonna on palautettu jo 322 000 000 juomapakkausta. Ihan mieletön määrä! Jos pysytään samoissa palautusasteluvuissa kuin 2014-2016, niin 96% tölkeistä, 92%muovipulloista ja 88% lasipulloista palautuu tämän järjestelmän kautta. Uudelleen täytettäviäkin lasipulloja on olemassa, ja niiden kierrätysaste on huimat 97%. Uudelleentäytettäviä pulloja ovat lähinnä perinteiset ruskeat olutpullot. Jokainen pullo käytetään uudelleen keskimäärin 33 kertaa, ja tämän jälkeen materiaali hyödynnetään kierrätyslasina. 

Palpan sivuilta saa myös todella hyvää infoa siitä, miksi pullojen ja tölkkien kierrätys kannattaa, vaikkei pikkurahan puutetta itsellä olisikaan.

Zero waste -näkökulmasta on syytä jokaisen kohdallaan miettiä, onko tarpeen juoda muovipulloihin (vaikka kuinka PETtiä olisikin) laitettua vettä ja vielä vähemmän sellaiseen muotoon prosessoitua vettä, joka on haitallista omalle keholle. Nimikeet taitavat tällöin muuttua virvoitus- ja energiajuomiksi. SItten kuskailla noita satoja miljoonia pulloja kierrätykseen, uudelleen jalostukseen ja taas kauppoihin.. Paljon ekologisempiakin tapoja itsensä nesteyttämiseen löytyy helposti. 

Talvikuukausina huomaan, että usein ei vaan vesi maistu. Ei sitten yhtään, vaikka suu on kuiva kuin Sahara, ja vessassakaan ei ole tarvinnut käydä pariin vuorokauteen (pientä liioittelua...). Silloin ratkaisu on helppoakin helpompi; naamioi näppärästi muutamalla yrtin oksalla ja limesiivulla saman tavaran uuteen pakettiin, ja ai että, kun koko perhe onkin yhtäkkiä kauhean janoisina paikalla. HAH! Valehtelevan markkinoinnin ammattilainen täällä terve!

Alkoholi on sitten taas asia erikseen; Suomessa varsinkin kun ollaan. Oma (Irlantilaisesta puhumattakaan!!) punaviiniaddiktioni kasvattaa kyllä hiilijalanjälkeäni merkittävästi, kun kotimaiset bisset eivät uppoa ja saunasiiderikin on soooo last season. Toivonkin siis universumilta, että joku voisi alkaa kasvattamaan luomuveriota Cabernet Sauvignon rypäleestä jossain tässä Rauman seudulla. EI KAI SE NYT NIIIN VAIKEAA VOI OLLA??
